‘Realistic’ Rafa discusses ‘managing expectations’

Rafael Benitez admits Newcastle must find a balance between showing ambition while being realistic over the prospects.
The Magpies entered the season having failed to strengthen a number of key areas, while the defensive tactics used against Chelsea at home last week have prompted widespread criticism of Benitez’s approach.
Ahead of their trip to champions Manchester City this weekend, the Toon boss showed little intent to change his thinking.
“We’ve been quite good against big teams,” he said. “City have top-class players who can make the difference, so everything has to be perfect if we want a result.
“You have to have ambition, but you have to be realistic. If we want to stay in PL we have to manage expectations.”
“We know we had a complicated fixture list and it would be a difficult season. But we have to approach City in the best way possible.
“With XI versus XI you never know. We don’t need to prove anything. We just need to do what we need to do to get three points or one point.”
