Manchester United are set to offer David de Gea a new contract in an attempt to fend off interest from Real Madrid, according to the Sun.
The Red Devils will make the Spanish number one their highest-paid player at the club and the most expensive in their history by increasing his £210k-a-week.
Real Madrid’s interest has lessened since his failed move back in 2015 when the infamous fax machine prevented the transfer from happening before the deadline.
United will offer de Gea a contract worth £300k-a-week, the same sized deal that French midfielder Paul Pogba is currently on.
This means that the duo would become the club’s joint highest ever earners.
Talks between Old Trafford officials are set to kick-off within the coming weeks, with the player who has is contracted with the club until 2019.
His current deal has a clause in it that allows the Red Devils to extend it by another year, however, they are excepted to just offer him a new contract.
The club hope to have agreed on a new deal with their shot-stopper by the time the player travels with Spain to Russia for this year’s World Cup.
The Sun’s source
A Manchester United source close to the Sun has told them:
“The club are finally going to kick-start contract talks with David very soon.
There were hints of talks in the summer but formal discussions had not yet started, it was just a matter of time.
There is no problem and the money men are committed to tying him down for the long-term.
He is probably the best and most important player at the club and there is no chance we want to lose him.”
